Triathlon
Triathlon is an exciting multi-discipline sport made up of a swim, then a bike ride and then a run.
An Overview of Triathlon
Triathlon is a multi-discipline sport consisting of swimming, cycling, and running. In a para triathlon event, athletes compete over a sprint distance. This consists of a 750m swim, a 20km cycle, and a 5km run.

- Boosts mental wellbeing
- Gives you a chance to try lots of sports at once!
Involvement
Finding a local triathlon club is a great way to get started and meet others in the sport. A club will give you access to coaches and experienced triathletes, meaning it is a great way to develop your skills. If you want to know more about a club, and how they can support you and accommodate any additional requirements, get in touch with the club directly.
There are over a thousand triathlon and multi-sport events to take part in in the UK. While the majority of these aren't specific disability events, event organisers are open to discuss any requirements to ensure you can take part.
Each year, British Triathlon hosts a National Para Triathlon Championships. They also have their Talent Identification programme, which is aimed at finding new talented athletes. Their Talent Squad supports athletes to perform at a world class level.
Success at competitions should be defined by an athlete's skill and ability, not their impairment. This means that sight classifications are vital to ensure fair and equal competition, so you can compete with confidence.

Adaptations and Equipment
People who are blind or partially sighted are required to use a guide throughout a triathlon race. In the swim, the athlete and guide are tethered by the thigh. In the cycle, a tandem bike is used, and in the run the tether is used on the wrist or hand.
BBS sell guide tethers and a range of high-visibility sportswear so that runners and guide runners can be easily seen and identified. You can purchase these items by visiting the BBS shop.
