Cycling

Cycling is a great sport, loved by millions around the world.

An Overview of Cycling

The most common cycling disciplines for people who are blind or partially sighted are road cycling and track cycling. You can take part in road cycling recreationally, to commute, or competitively. Track cycling is where riders ride around an indoor or outdoor velodrome on a fixed gear bike.

Benefits

  • Improve stamina
  • Explore new places
  • Challenge yourself to race against others

Involvement

Limitless is a British Cycling programme designed to support disabled people to discover the joy of cycling. It is open to riders with any disability, of any age, and irrespective of your cycling experience. Whether you're looking to meet new people, try something new or even get into racing, Limitless sessions are a great place to begin. They are run by local clubs across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Whether it's on the track or the road, British Cycling's Paralympic Talent Programme explores the potential of cyclists who fall into the four Paralympic classification groups, developing and equipping riders with the potential to progress into the Foundation and Podium Squads.

Sight classifications are important to ensure fair and equal competition. Success at competitions should be defined by an athlete's skill and ability, not their impairment. The sight classifications should give all athletes the confidence that they are competing against others equally.

Adaptations and Equipment

Cyclists with a visual impairment tend to ride tandem bicycles. The person at the back is known as the stoker, and the sighted person at the front is known as the pilot. Inclusive clubs can provide tandems.

You will also need a helmet, appropriate clothing, and footwear.
