An Overview of Shooting

About Target Shooting

Target shooting is a great way to get active. There are two target shooting disciplines:

  • Supported shooting is when the rifle rests on a stand. This stand takes the rifle's weight and provides some stability. This is used for all beginners.
  • Free standing shooting is when the weight of the rifle is supported by the shooter.

Target shooting will help improve your strength and concentration, while also being an excellent stress reliever.

Involvement

How do I get involved?

Across the country, there are 30 centres supporting shooting for people with visual impairments. To find your nearest club, use the BBS Activity Finder or visit the Disability Shooting Great Britain website.

Progression

Through shooting clubs, there are many opportunities to participate in internal and inter-club competitions. There is also the opportunity to compete at European and World Championships.

Classification

Sight classifications are important to ensure fair and equal competition. Success at competitions should be defined by an athlete's skill and ability, not their impairment. The sight classifications should give all athletes the confidence that they are competing against others equally.

For more information and to download an application, visit our Classifications page.

Adaptations and Equipment

Athletes use standard shooting equipment with an electronic audio aiming device fitted to the gun. The aiming device detects the aim of the gun relative to the target and provides the shooter, through headphones, different tones indicating where they are aiming. The centre of the target is white, while the outward circles are increasingly darker grey. As the shooter approaches the white centre of the target, more light is reflected into the sight and therefore a higher frequency sound is heard.

A sighted assistant is also used to ensure safe shooting.
