Bowls

Played outdoors on a flat square of grass, or indoors on an artificial surface, bowls involves throwing/rolling a ball to end up as close to a target as possible.

An Overview of Bowls

Bowls truly is the sport for all - all ages, all sexes and all abilities.

Bowls involves rolling balls towards a smaller ball, known as the jack. Bowls takes place on a square of grass called a green. The object is to get one or more of your bowls closer to the jack than those of your opponents.

Benefits

  • Great mental and physical workout
  • Meet new people
  • Build new skills

Involvement

There are bowls clubs in Britain that offer either visually impaired specific Bowls sessions or are inclusive to people with a visual impairment. To locate the nearest club to you, use our Activity Finder.

Once you are involved in a club, there are many club competitions you can take part in. These may be disability-specific competitions or mixed.

Sight classifications are important to ensure fair and equal competition. Success at competitions should be defined by an athlete's skill and ability, not their impairment. The sight classifications should give all athletes the confidence that they are competing against others equally.

Adaptations and Equipment

Blind and partially sighted people play bowls with the assistance of a Director. This is a sighted person who stands beyond the jack, and vocally indicates where it is.
