Marathon runners raise over £18k for BBS

On Sunday 23rd April, our team of dedicated runners completed the 2023 TCS London Marathon! Olivia, Emma, Alice, Rosie, Susan, Paul, Richard, Duncan and Phil have been training hard to tackle the 26.2-mile challenge and raise funds to help people with sight loss get active.

We had a fantastic day cheering on team BBS and are delighted to announce that they've raised over £18,500! As a small charity, their fundraising will make a big difference and help change the lives of people with sight loss through the power of sport.

Read more about what they had to say about the event below!

I am still processing what we have achieved and, to be honest, I think I will be for a long time! Being partially sighted hit me like a freight train but has also opened my eyes to opportunities like running for BBS. Running the London Marathon with my amazing friend and guide will stick with us for the rest of our lives. At the start of a running journey taking part in a marathon seems so scary but I absolutely encourage everyone to do it. BBS has been truly amazing and was a massive honour to run for them.

- Paul

What an experience! I was very nervous in the run-up but knowing I had the commitment to British Blind Sport pushed me on. Everyone says the crowd is amazing, but it has to be seen to be believed. The roar of the crowd was insane at times, particularly around Canary Wharf. I have a stunning medal and all the memories captured with it. It was made even more poignant that I have been able to support a fabulous charity. Thank you for the opportunity.

- Emma

So proud to be one of the BBS fundraising runners - this is my first marathon and I shall not forget it. My head is still buzzing with the excitement of the day. I had to pinch myself a couple of times during the run as I couldn't believe I was able to take part. I learned so much about myself during the training. It's all worth it!

- Olivia

It was my first marathon, and I can say it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The London crowd was amazing, and the day was made even more special by being able to run it for the BBS charity!

- Richard

Guiding Paul and being part of Team BBS at the London Marathon 2023 is something I will never forget. Everything they tell you about this race is true, it is an incredibly special event. We are so proud to have raised lots of money for British Blind Sport and really appreciate all their support throughout this epic journey!

- Alice

Been a huge pleasure and privilege to run the London Marathon for BBS. The support from BBS and of course the crowd all the way round was immense. Coming across Tower Bridge with the noise of the crowd will live with me for a long time!

- Duncan

BBS also had a runner taking part in the Boston Marathon. Mike was one of 30,000 athletes who participated in the race on Monday, 17th April, raising over £1,500 for BBS and exceeding his target of £750.

Running the London Marathon for BBS last year opened so many doors and inspired me to run the Boston Marathon. The race was an incredible experience and the atmosphere was electric! The race meant a lot to me, and the money raised will help to improve the lives of people who have lost their sight through the power of sport. The BBS team was incredible, and the charity's support was fantastic from the moment I signed up until I finished. I would recommend that anyone looking for a new challenge should sign up with BBS!

- Mike
