Surfing

Surfing is a surface water sport in which a person rides on a moving wave on a surf board.

An Overview of Surfing

There are different variations of surfing including paddle boarding, body boarding, long boarding and short boarding.

Involvement

Within the UK, there are a number of adaptive surf centres who have trained and experienced instructors.

There are two classifications for VI surfing as set by the International Surfing Association (ISA):

  • Para Surfing Vision Impairment 1 - Any surfer who rides a wave in a standing position with an IBSA classification level of B1
  • Para Surfing Vision Impairment 2 - Any surfer who rides a wave in a standing position with an IBSA classification level B2 and B3

Surfing England's role within adaptive surfing is predominantly at the elite level of competition. They have recently started working on a pathway with partner surf schools to encourage, identify and progress surfers with potential to join their elite training squad coached by multiple coaches across the country.
