Showdown

Showdown is a fast-moving sport, with similarities to table tennis and air hockey. It was designed for people with a visual impairment, but anyone can play!

An Overview of Showdown

The game is played on a specially designed table for two players using flat, paddle-type bats. The aim of the game is to bat the ball off the side wall, along the table, under the centre screen, and into the opponent's goal. The first player to reach eleven points, or to lead by two or more points, is the winner.

Each player serves two times in a row. Players score two points for a goal. They also score one point when their opponent hits the ball into the screen, hits the ball off the table, or touches the ball with anything but the bat or batting hand. Sound produced by the rattling inside the ball indicates its location during play.

Showdown is a great way of developing ear/hand coordination, meeting new people and developing spatial awareness.

Involvement

Showdown is a developing sport in the UK. You can currently play showdown with the Croysutt Warriors Goalball Club, with the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind, or by contacting the RNIB London office.

Classification

Sight classifications are important to ensure fair and equal competition. Success at competitions should be defined by an athlete's skill and ability, not their impairment. The sight classifications should give all athletes the confidence that they are competing against others equally.

Adaptations and Equipment

The sport is inexpensive to start up, requires minimal maintenance, and can be played in a room the size of a classroom or meeting room. All players must wear eyeshades to ensure an equal playing field. Players should also wear a specialist glove to protect their batting hand.
