Archery

Archery is a great sport that can take place indoors or outdoors so you can do it all year round. Plus it's incredibly sociable!

An Overview of Archery

The aim of archery is to shoot an arrow from a bow to a target from several metres away.

Local clubs, counties and other archery bodies run their own competitions. The BBS Archery section holds its own championships every year. These are the Indoor Championships in April and Outdoor Championships in September.

Benefits

  • Improves fitness
  • Support mental wellbeing
  • Meet new people

Involvement

As a beginner you will need to learn the basic technique. There are many archery clubs around the country which support visually impaired archers. To find a club in your area, use the BBS Activity Finder. Alternatively visit the 'Start Archery' website and the use the 'Find a Club' database.

Sight classifications are important to ensure fair and equal competition. Success at competitions should be defined by an athlete's skill and ability, not their impairment. The sight classifications should give all athletes the confidence that they are competing against others equally.

Adaptations and Equipment

Depending on your level of vision, adaptions may include:

  • A visual or tactile bow sight
  • Foot locators to ensure your feet stay in the same position for each shot
  • Tactile sight on a tripod to help you line up with the centre of the target
  • A sighted assistant (called a spotter) who helps you to shoot safely and tell you where the arrows hit the target.
