Angling

Angling is the sport of catching fish with a rod, line, and hook.

An Overview of Angling

Angling is the sport of trying to catch a fish, and something anyone can do

There are different types of ways of angling, and each requires a different technique:

  • Float fishing is the most common way to fish. Anglers can either use a fishing pole with a line, float and hook or a rod and reel. Anglers cast the line and once the float submerges, it is a 'bite', and hopefully a fish!
  • Lure Fishing has grown in popularity. A fishing lure is a type of artificial bait designed to mimic real prey animals, and attract the attention of predatory fish. The lures use flashy colours, bright reflections and movements, to appeal to the fish.
  • Fly Fishing uses a rod with an artificial fly as bait.

Benefits

  • Stress relief
  • Gets you outside and enjoying the natural world
  • Maintain positive mental health

Involvement

To start fishing you will need to purchase a rod license, which can be bought online, or at your local Post Office. You will also need to get a permit for the lake or river where you would like to fish. Once you have these, it is recommended that you learn which fishing technique you prefer, as well as about your equipment, and the different type of fish you could catch. This can be done from books, online videos, or other anglers.

The Angling Trust, Canal River Trust and The Albrighton Trust offer coached angling sessions for beginners. Beginners will learn how to put bait on a hook, cast a line, land a fish, unhook fish safely, handle fish and return them safely back into the water.

Sight classifications are important to ensure fair and equal competition. Success at competitions should be defined by an athlete's skill and ability, not their impairment. The sight classifications should give all athletes the confidence that they are competing against others equally.

For more information about angling competitions, you can contact the Angling Trust.

Adaptations and Equipment

Basic equipment includes: rod and reel, line, a bobber, hooks and bait.

Angling is one of the few sports where individuals with very different characteristics and abilities can compete on similar terms against each other. The role that environmental conditions and chance can play in catching a fish or not, can effectively 'level the playing field'.
