British Blind Sport, UK Deaf Sport and Sport Birmingham Young Leaders gathered at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford from the 12th-14th of April for the See My Voice 2022 Residential Camp. This was a 3-day event that included a variety of sports and classroom activities leading up to a final assessment.

The sports offered were goalball, tennis, boccia, seated volleyball and baseball, all of which provided an inclusive environment for people with disabilities to participate. The Young Leaders thoroughly enjoyed the sessions with one saying, "I loved the huge variety of sports that we played.", and another saying, "My favourite part was the rotational activities.".

The Young Leaders also attended workshops where they improved their leadership skills and learnt how to deliver a sports session. The ECB provided cricket workshops and Goalball UK provided goalball workshops. Both covered the principles of properly structuring a session and ensuring that sports delivered by coaches are safe and enjoyable! These workshops provided the Young Leaders with a variety of fundamental skills that they can apply in sport and everyday life.

On the final day of the residential, the Young Leaders had the opportunity to demonstrate what they had learnt and deliver their own sessions. They worked in groups to design a 15-minute session that was fun and inclusive of participants’ needs. Each Young Leader did an outstanding job, and it was wonderful to see the amount of thought and care that went into the sessions. Tennis, handball, football and other activities were taught throughout the day.

Overall, the residential was a huge success, giving the Young Leaders confidence, allowing them to meet new people, participate in a range of activities and broaden their knowledge of sport and coaching. The Young Leaders did themselves proud. They worked well together and had fun in the process!
