BBS welcomes three new additions to Sport Development team, with a familia twist!

British Blind Sport (BBS) is delighted to announce the appointment of three incoming team members who will be joining the organisation's Sport Development team this month – Shamira Naidu-Young and siblings Roy Turnham and Lora Fachie MBE.

Alaina MacGregor, Chief Executive of British Blind Sport, said ahead of their appointments: "We're thrilled to welcome Shamira, Roy and Lora to our team. Joining us later this month, each brings a wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to blind and partially sighted sport and physical activity. The arrival of Shamira, Roy and Lora marks an exciting new chapter for our Sport Development team as we continue to expand and have a positive impact across the sight loss sector. The irony of siblings job sharing role is not lost on us, however on the day it was apparent that they will both bring their own unique perspective and were the best candidates on the day."

Joining as full-time Participation Officer, Shamira will play a pivotal role in supporting the Head of Sport Development in increasing participation levels in sport among blind and partially sighted people in the UK through the delivery of programmes and events that provide local and national sporting opportunities for all ages.

Shamira brings an extensive knowledge in sport management and inclusion, as well as a strong academic background, as she joins British Blind Sport while completing a PhD in Sport Development and Gender.

Ahead of beginning her new role, Shamira said: "I am really looking forward to starting my new role as Participation Officer at British Blind Sport and taking on this new challenge! I have always been committed to creating opportunities for marginalised groups to participate in sport. I am excited to bring my skills and passion to creating opportunities within sport for blind and partially sighted people, as well as learning from current participants and the team at BBS."

Celebrated Paralympians Lora Fachie MBE and Roy Turnham will be joining BBS as they job share the role of Workforce Development Officer on a fixed-term one-year contract.

The Workforce Development Officer role plays a crucial role in enhancing the capabilities and expertise of coaches, teachers, volunteers and other professionals who deliver sports coaching to blind and partially sighted people. This role is dedicated to fostering a skilled and knowledgeable workforce capable of providing inclusive and effective sporting experiences for all.

Their combined experience in elite para-cycling and blind football brings unique insight and dedication to supporting a more inclusive sporting landscape.

As Lora prepares to begin her new role, she said: "I'm incredibly excited to be working for British Blind sport and can't wait to get stuck in to improving access and the overall experience of sport and leisure for those with a visual impairment. Family is immensely important to me so to be given the opportunity to job share the workforce development officer role with my brother Roy means so much to me and I can't wait to see what we can achieve together."

Roy added: "I'm incredibly excited to be joining the BBS team. It's a charity very close to my heart: the BBS-run competitions I entered as a teenager played a huge role in my development as an athlete and in my overall enjoyment of sport."
