Get fit with BBS’s new Active at Home programme for 2022!

As with many other sport and physical activity providers, the Coronavirus pandemic encouraged British Blind Sport (BBS) to adapt its services and explore the world of online workout classes. BBS's audio-led sessions, developed in collaboration with inclusive providers, have helped blind and partially sighted people keep active from their homes during the pandemic and have continued to be enjoyed by people around the world. Our YouTube channel has over 100 on-demand activity videos in a variety of styles. The workouts have proved so popular that BBS has chosen to continue offering them alongside our regular delivery and will launch a new programme in 2022 to encourage more blind and partially sighted people to be active.

One participant said, “I went through a period of poor mental health which I know would have been so much worse if I didn't have BBS's fitness classes.”

Another said, “It’s nice to do exercise alongside other people (even virtually!) and have very motivating instructors who speak to the participants and correct our positions. It’s a great idea!”

The new Active At Home programme will launch Monday 10th January and will consist of 3 parts:

1) A live workout week will be held at the beginning of each month, with a different 30-minute exercise class taking place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at 6pm via zoom.

2) On Thursday, an optional pre-recorded session will be available to stream via the BBS YouTube channel. The sessions will be hosted by two new providers and will involve a variety of different activities.

3) At the end of the week, the BBS team will upload recordings of the live workouts for those who were unable to attend. The goal is to do the same class on the same day of the week, every week until the next live workout week at the start of each month. The first live week is scheduled to take place from the 10th to the 14th of January. All classes take place from 6pm to 6.30pm. View the schedule below:

Monday 10th Jan – Strength and Tone with Nick Jones from The Lakeside Fitness Studio

Tuesday 11th Jan – HIIT with Richard Pinchen from Brand Inc Fitness

HIIT training stands for High-Intensity Interval Training - a form of cardiovascular exercise. HIIT training is great for those who are short on time as a way of maximising your time spent in the gym. A typical HIIT session, not including your warm-up, would last a maximum of 20 minutes. Wednesday 12th Jan – Yoga 6pm to 6.30pm Yoga with Becky from Synergy Dance LTD

Yoga focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. It concentrates on bringing harmony between mind and body. This is a great session for those looking to improve posture, flexibility, build muscle strength and increase blood flow. The session is hosted by Becky from Synergy Dance. Thursday 13th Jan - YouTube Session, optional pre-recorded session
Hosted by our new PT’s, Laura Turner and Natalie Jamieson. Sessions will include Legs, Bums and Tums and Cardio fitness circuits. These sessions will be available for you to do at any convenient time. The sessions are suitable for all abilities, no equipment or experience is needed!

Friday 14th Jan – Pilates with Felicity from FJB Pilates

Pilates aims to strengthen the body, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing. This helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being.
