On Saturday 18th June, footballers from across the UK attended the annual British Blind Sport National Visually Impaired (VI) Youth Football Tournament and Development Day at thePoint4, Venns Lane, Hereford, HR1 1DT.
The players who were aged between 9 to 17 were put through their paces in the morning by our qualified FA coaches races, before applying what they had learned to the tournament matches in the afternoon.
A total of 8 teams played in the tournament in the afternoon, and the winners of u12’s were a combination of individual players and the winners of u17’s were North West Scorpions. The presentation at the end was delivered by ex-Paralympian football player Darren Harris. Each player received a participation medal and a further 6 players received a star of the day or a player of the tournament trophy in recognition of their desire to learn new skills, leadership and ability to apply to a game situation.
Everyone involved in the event; staff, volunteers, participants and parents were asked to provide feedback of the event through an evaluation. Here is what some people had to say about the event:
- “Today has been the best day of my life” – 12 year old, Participant
- “Thanks again to you and the team for all the work you put in to a very successful day. Our son really enjoyed the event, and is looking forward to joining North West Scorpions next season, so that in itself is a massive success which you have helped make happen. It was great to see everyone giving such great effort, despite their challenges, and getting so much from it, thanks! – Parent of participant
- “One of our students attended the British Blind Sport Football Tournament this past weekend and he hasn’t stopped talking about it since! His attitude and behaviour has improved drastically and we believe it is largely due to this event and so thank you for giving him a good experience! – Teacher of Participant
Regarding the event, Lauren Impey, Participation Delivery Officer at British Blind Sport, said “The aims of all of our British Blind Sport events are to provide a VI friendly environment where blind and partially sighted people can have fun, make new friends and compete to the best of their ability. And we achieved exactly that. A total of 51 players arrived and showed high levels of enthusiasm and maturity in transferring what they had learned during the coaching sessions in the morning to games in the afternoon.”
British Blind Sport is delighted at the turnout of the event and would like to thank the individuals that helped make this event possible and congratulate all of the footballers that participated.
