Alex has always been interested in sport, but found that he didn’t truly know what was out there for him until he discovered British Blind Sport...
Alex was born with bilateral aniridia, which means he doesn’t have an iris in either of his eyes. He also has bilateral nystagmus, extreme light sensitivity and has artificial lenses in both eyes.
Whilst Alex has had to contend with many of these conditions for the majority of his life and he has not let that stop him getting involved in physical activity.
“Sport plays a big role in my life – I love it and it keeps me motivated”
Alex first discovered British Blind Sport through ‘First Steps’, which is a project for children with sight loss that helps to improve their motor skills and confidence through physical activity.
Alex then went on to try out new sports at BBS ‘Have A Go Days’ and also signed up for BBS’ social action project ‘See My Voice’, which gives young people the opportunity to learn leadership and employability skills and volunteer at sports organisations.
The project includes a residential camp where young people with sight loss come together, socialise and put the skills they’ve learnt into action.
“BBS has helped me gain more confidence and make new friends who understand having sight loss. We can relate to each other’s situations and I don’t have to keep explaining why my eyes are quite closed”
In particular, Alex enjoyed the residential trips and activities because it allowed him to try new sports that he wouldn’t have thought it possible to join in with – each time he attends an event, he finds something new that he wants to try!
“I’ve had the chance to volunteer which was a great experience and I’d love to continue volunteering to help other people with sight loss enjoy sport and physical activity”
Despite his eye conditions, Alex loves sport and proved his passion for it by taking it as one of his GCSE options! He encourages anyone who wants to be more active but might be nervous about it, to just register for a BBS event. Like Alex, you might try something new, discover a hidden talent or just make some new friends – and what could be better than that!
