Everything you need to know to make the most out of the British Blind Sport Activity Finder...
What is the British Blind Sport Activity Finder?
A tool to help people find visually impaired (VI) friendly community activities in their local area simply by searching using their postcode. From football to walking groups to tennis to leisure centres and more, people with a VI and their support networks will be able to use this accessible tool on the British Blind Sport website.
Who is it for?
We want to advertise as many activities as possible across the UK. This doesn’t just mean sports clubs! We want any community providers to register their sport and physical opportunities, including sight loss charities. If you deliver activity sessions and want to recruit more VI people this is the one for you. You can even register more than one activity if you offer multiple sports, just remember to enter the location as the venue of the sessions not the home of your organisation.
Is this restricted to “visually impaired people only” sessions?
No definitely not. We want to give everyone the chance to take part in the sessions of their choice. In the registration form, you will have the opportunity to state what kind of sessions you offer and you can tick more than one. These could be VI specific, sensory specific, pan-disability or sessions open to people of all abilities.
Why are BBS creating this when there are other activity finders out there?
British Blind Sport conducted research highlighting that “Awareness” is a key barrier to VI people taking part in activities and we want to change that. We want this to be the recognised, go-to place across the VI community in the UK to find opportunities. We will be working closely with our charity partners in the VI sector to drive traffic to this page.
Another activity finder!? Do we need to register all our activities yet again?
We are aware of other activity finders hosted by organisations in the UK but none that are VI specific so we feel there is a need for this tool. In order to reduce the admin to organisations across the country we are speaking to other organisations who have an activity finder to encourage data sharing e.g Parasport, London Sport, Disability Sport NI, Disability Sport Wales. If you are interested in bulk uploading from an Excel spreadsheet please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
How do organisations register?
Organisations can register their activities at the below link as soon as you can. Please note that we are signposting only, therefore we have deliberately only asked you for limited info such as club contact details, so people can contact for the most up to date information. This will save you coming back to our website frequently to update your info. If/when you want to update your info, one of the team at BBS will be happy to help you.
When will it go live?
Tentatively, we are aiming to launch this at the end of May 2019 but this depends on having good coverage of activities across the UK. We know that you only get one shot at a first impression and the last thing we want is for people to log on and not have any local opportunities to access.
How can partners help us?
Spread the word! We want to get as many activities and providers there as possible to make this the best possible tool for everyone to use. Use your social media and newsletters. We will be happy to provide you with suggested copy or images for this purpose. If you know a VI person having a great time at a local club or facility, tell them to encourage their club to sign up so they can increase their membership!
